European stock markets are trading lower this Wednesday, driven by a sharp decline in defense sector stocks. News that the German government intends to abandon its ambitious plan to build six F126 frigates\u2014which would have been the largest project in the country\u2019s naval history\u2014has caused significant concern in the market.<\/p>\n
The decision, reported by media outlets such as Der Spiegel magazine and the British newspaper Financial Times, directly impacted companies that would have benefited from the billion-dollar contract. The arms manufacturer Rheinmetall, for example, saw its stock plummet by about 15%.<\/p>\n
Initially, Rheinmetall was expected to become the main contractor for the F126 frigate program, under a deal valued at up to 12.8 billion euros (approximately 14.5 billion dollars), pending approval by the budget committee. The company would take over the contract from the Dutch shipyard Damen Naval after years of delays in the project.<\/p>\n
Other companies in the defense sector also felt the impact of the news. Shares of companies such as Renk, Hensoldt, and Leonardo fell between 4% and 6%. In contrast, TKMS, which is working on an alternative to the canceled program, saw its stock price rise by more than 9%.<\/p>\n

The overhaul of the F126 program represents a significant blow not only to Rheinmetall but also to Germany\u2019s defense ambitions. The country had pledged to become \u201cEurope\u2019s strongest conventional army\u201d by 2039, a goal that could be jeopardized by the cancellation of strategic projects.<\/p>\n
In addition, Germany plans to acquire a 40% stake in the tank manufacturer KNDS, which is expected to hold its initial public offering (IPO) soon, in collaboration with France. This move also adds a layer of uncertainty to the sector.<\/p>\n
In the geopolitical arena, oil prices fell for the third consecutive day. This is due to signs that traffic through the Strait of Hormuz is returning to normal following a provisional peace agreement between the United States and Iran. Brent crude fell by about 1.5%, dropping below $76 per barrel\u2014its lowest level since February 27, the day before military action against Iran began.<\/p>\n
As for economic indicators, the Ifo index of German business sentiment rose to 85.6 points in June, but fell slightly short of market expectations. At around 6:57 a.m. (Bras\u00edlia time), the London Stock Exchange was down 0.03%, Frankfurt was down 0.97%, while Paris was up 0.16%.
